The Paiva Learning Centre
The Paiva Learning Centre was founded in 2006 by Mr and Mrs Paiva to offer remediation and learning support to the students of Enjabulweni Independent School.
Over the course of time The Paiva Learning Centre has evolved into a centre that offers special education teaching and learning as well as remediation to children in the mainstream classes.
Learners enrolled in the special education programme follow an academic and non-academic curriculum tailored to their developmental level. This curriculum includes developmentally appropriate academic work, functional literacy and numeracy, skills training classes, developmentally appropriate life skills lessons, computer lessons, art and physical education. Learners are integrated into non-core mainstream lessons, at an appropriate grade level, i.e.: Physical Education, Music, Life Skills, Computers, Robotics, Art and Cultural SiSwati. The purpose of this integration is to aid the development of social communication skills. All learners enrolled in the special education classes attend afternoon sports and cultural sessions.
Learners in the mainstream who require remediation are placed into the remediation programme after consultation with parents, teachers and school management. These students attend specific lessons in the learning centre to receive individual instruction, with differentiated material to aid their learning. Learners in remediation continue to follow the mainstream curriculum in that subject, but at a pace more suitable for the development of their understanding of the content in that subject. After consultation between the remediation teacher, Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist suggestions for possible accommodations are made in order to aid the learners continued progress in mainstream classes.
Learners are entered into the special education or remediation programme upon the referral of an Educational Psychologist and all accommodations suggested are ratified by the Independent Examinations Board, after re-evaluation by an Educational Psychologist.
